Understanding Fragrance Families

Understanding Fragrance Families

Every fragrance, no matter how complex it smells, generally falls into one of a small number of broad families based on its dominant heart and base notes. Knowing these families makes it much easier to shop for a scent you will actually enjoy wearing, since you can start from a profile you already know you like rather than testing at random.

Floral

Floral fragrances are built around flower notes such as rose, jasmine, peony, iris, or lily. They tend to read soft, romantic, and classically feminine, though floral fragrances are worn across genders. This family works well for daytime social settings, spring occasions, and romantic evenings.

Amber

Also called oriental, amber fragrances lean on vanilla, resins, incense, and warm spice. They are rich, often high in sillage, and read more formal or sensual than the other families. Amber fragrances tend to suit evening wear, colder months, and special occasions.

Woody

Woody fragrances center on notes like sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, patchouli, and mossy or earthy accords. They are warm without being overly sweet, and often carry a grounded, confident character that works well for business settings and cooler weather.

Fresh

Fresh fragrances draw on citrus, green, aquatic, and light fruity notes. They are the lightest of the four families, read clean and energizing, and are the easiest to wear for everyday and daytime use, including office settings and warmer months.

Many fragrances do not sit neatly in a single family, and are instead described as hybrids, such as woody amber or floral fresh, when two families are close to equally dominant. When you find a family or hybrid you like, it becomes a simple filter for finding new fragrances worth trying.
