How to Store Your Fragrance Collection
Fragrance is a delicate mixture of oils and alcohol, and both light and heat can break that mixture down over time, changing the scent and shortening its shelf life. A few storage habits go a long way toward keeping a bottle performing the way it did the day it was opened.
Keep it cool and dark
Store fragrance in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, such as a closet, drawer, or dedicated box. Sunlight and heat speed up the breakdown of fragrance oils and can noticeably shift how a scent smells over time.
Avoid the bathroom
Bathrooms are convenient but are usually the worst place to keep fragrance, since daily temperature and humidity swings from showers accelerate degradation. A bedroom drawer or closet shelf is a better home for a collection.
Keep the cap on
Always replace the cap after use. Oxygen exposure is one of the main causes of a fragrance turning over time, so keeping air out when the bottle is not in use helps preserve it.
Avoid extreme temperature changes
Frequent moves between hot and cold, such as leaving a bottle in a car, can cause the fragrance to break down faster and, in some cases, cause the bottle itself to leak or crack. Keep fragrance at a stable room temperature whenever possible.
Stored well, most fragrances stay enjoyable for several years, and some improve slightly as they settle. Taking a few extra seconds with storage is a simple way to protect what is often a meaningful purchase.
